What in the world?! This is the 3 story this week that I have seen about illegal immigrants committing heinous crimes against minors.

I feel like the United States' obsession with deterrence is just like, complete lunacy. Considering that all the system and our culture ever focuses on is "deterrence", you think if we hit a wall where we still had a problem with crime we'd be like, "Oh you know maybe deterrence on its own isn't enough to solve the problem. Maybe we should try other things" but instead it's just "Oh this'll deter", "That'll deter". We have harshest prison sentences and worst prisons of western first world countries but apparently that deterrence isn't "strong enough" and so we have higher crime rates than all other western first world countries. What's their response? "Oh we need more deterrence". Now you need to PAY for prison. It's just like more ideas but it's the same idea in a different incarnation. You're doing multiple versions of the same thing that you said would work the first time but apparently "isn't enough now". Anyone know what "moving the goal post" is? If deterrence worked, then you would just have a deterrent and that would control crime effectively enough by itself, right? But it becomes a circle where even if it doesn't work, you can just say "Well if that didn't work, I guess the answer is MORE deterrence then". And the thing is, you can't really prove them "wrong" on their belief that deterrence will work "eventually" because they can always just keep coming up with more ridiculous and insane things to try and deter. So they can just keep saying "OH deterrence 'works', its just that we're not harsh enough yet" and they can keep making the same argument for everything If they said the death penalty would deter and it doesn't, then they say "Oh its these appeals processes that make the wait time too long so its ineffective", we could listen to them, follow their advice, and then it still might not work and their solution will be "Oh we need TORTURE + the death penalty", or "Oh i dont think lethal injection is scary enough... the gas chamber will deter!" Then it's "Oh the gas chamber doesn't work, let's bring back 'quartering' where you slice off different parts of their body" It's an argument that literally doesn't end
